Changing directories
- To change to www directory, at $ prompt, type: set default [.www]
- To change to main directory, type: set default [username]
Assistance on the vax:
- On your vax account, at the $ prompt, type: assist.
- Then type "nu" for new user, and then "vms".
Misc. tips:
- At $, type: show quota. This shows how much space you have used and
what is left.
Using mail on vax:
Setting up a distribution list (or address book)
- Create a file with all e-mails of those you want to receive the
mail. To do this, at the $ prompt, type, for example: edit/edt friends.dis.
(Or, if you want to just send to one friend, name the distribution list
with his or her name and only enter that one e-mail address.)
You MAY need to hit c and then enter, in order to edit. Then list all e-mail
addresses on separate lines. Then control/z to save.
- To send to them, at the $, type: mail. Then type: send. Then, to:
@friends. Then, type your message, and hit control/z.
Commands for Using folders inside of "mail":
- dir /fo: when inside of mail, this lists all folders
- move foldername: when reading a particlular message, this moves it
(and creates the folder if necessary) to the folder
- read foldername: this opens the folder to the first message in the
folder
- dir: this shows a directory of the folder
- read 2: this read message 2 in the folder
Personalizing your username
- At $, type: mail/edit
- SET PERSONAL_NAME=text-string is used to attach the string
text-string to all of your mail messages. The text-string must be surrounded
by quotes if it contains spaces.
Sending mail- options:
- SEND: usual command
- SEND/EDIT: invokes the editor when composing a message
- SEND/SELF: causes mail to send you a copy of the message
- REPLY: is used to resopn to a message
- REPLY/EXTRACT: enables you to reply to contents of the message
- FORWARD: sends a copy of the current message to another user
- FORWARD.EDIT: enables you to add comments to a message before it
is forwarded
- DEL [message-number]: deletes the message identified by
message-number.
Customizing mail:
- SET COPY_SELF=(REPLY,SEND) tells MAIL to send back to you, a copy
of all messages to which you reply, or which you send.
- SET CC_PROMPT tells MAIL to automatically prompt for a list of
addresses to receive "carbon copies" of your messages.
