I'd like to introduce some lab exercises.  There are some well-defined network lab exercises at www-net.cs.umass.edu/ethereal-labs/

Ethereal - is a software packages that captures all packets coming and going from your computer at every layer.  It can be used in various ways, filtering, and limiting to certain protocols so you can see what is truly going on at the protocol level.  It is very popular and as far as I know is the industry standard for this type of software.  It is used in industry to troubleshoot network issues that need packet analysis.

Download & install it (along with the required capturing software) to your computer so we can do the labs with it.  We'll have to see if we can install it on the computers in the lab.
